Marking nearly a year since his first-ever release as a recording artist, acclaimed Southern crooner Kashus Culpepper adds to his buzzed-about catalog of growing acclaim, and meteoric rise, with the release ofBroken Wing Bird (feat. Sierra Ferrell).” The new song drops during a milestone week for Culpepper, ahead of his national TV debut on CBS Saturday Morning tomorrow and following his Nissan Stadium debut at CMA Fest.

“I’ve always loved the sound of classic country. It brings me peace whenever I hear it,” shares 2025 GRAMMY.com Artist to Watch Culpepper. “I wanted to write a song that replicated that feeling. And the same feelings I got when I would listen to all those old Willie Nelson songs. Something about those tunes made me feel like I was on a back porch late afternoon drinking sweet tea or something. And having Sierra Ferrell on this song makes it even better for me.”

On “Broken Wing Bird” Culpepper and Ferrell’s distinctly different voices weave together on the gorgeous ode to a delicate but fraught love. The sublimely powerful song was written by Culpepper and producer Brian Elmquist and recorded in Muscle Shoals. Earlier this week, on Wednesday, the Billboard Country Rookie debuted the song on the hallowed Grand Ole Opry stage.

Continuing to take “his hauntingly beautiful country-Americana-inspired sound” (People) on the road, following recent dates with Leon Bridges and Dylan Gossett, he’ll join Whiskey Myers and a variety of festival billings throughout the summer with dates to come in the fall supporting Darius Rucker and Sierra Ferrell.

ABOUT KASHUS CULPEPPER

Alabama-born country crooner Kashus Culpepper encompasses the sound of the South. A student and reverent purveyor of Southern music – country, soul, blues, folk, and rock – Culpepper’s husky, sandpaper growl bellows like a freight train over self-penned stories that are as raw and real as they are haunting. Finding his voice in church as young as five years old, it wasn’t until 2020’s global pandemic that Culpepper went from listener to performer, picking up a guitar and learning cover songs to play at barrack bonfires in Rota, Spain during his deployment with the Navy. Covers soon became originals, and once he landed home on U.S. shores, Kash played dive bars up and down the Mississippi Gulf Coast, making a name for himself with the fresh-yet-reminiscent sound that oozes from his very being. Crashing into prominence, Culpepper sold out headline club shows throughout the South before formally releasing a single song, and opened shows nationwide for sound pioneers like Charles Wesley Godwin, Charley Crockett, and NEEDTOBREATHE. With Nashville taking notice, Culpepper found a musical home at Big Loud Records and has dropped a string of resonating singles. Culpepper joins Leon Bridges, Dylan Gossett and Whiskey Myers on tour this year; and makes first-ever appearances at Stagecoach, C2C in London, Tortuga Music Festival, and more. Named one of GRAMMY.com’s 25 Artists to Watch in 2025, Apple Music Zane Lowe’s 25 Artists for ’25, 2025 Amazon Music Bonfire Artist to Watch, 2025 Pandora Country Artist to Watch, Opry NextStage Class of 2025, Billboard’s February 2025 Country Rookie of the Month, Apple Music’s February 2025 Country Riser of the Month, and Martin Artist Showcase Class of 2025, The Guardian declares: “it’s obvious why his career has been fast-tracked. The handful of songs he’s released so far take a smart, often witty route… performed in a style he classifies as ’southern sounds’…”
