Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina Shines Light on Reunification Success During National Awareness Month

Each June, National Reunification Month honors the families who persevere through adversity to reunite with their children, and the community partners who walk alongside them. This year, Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina (FFA-NC) is recognizing the resounding strength behind those reunions, spotlighting personal stories of healing, progress, and possibility.
Reunification is the outcome when children in foster care are able to safely return to their families. While foster care can be a necessary response to immediate concerns, reunification reflects a longer, more complex journey of resilience—one that requires time, trust, and support. FFA-NC works every day to ensure that the journey is not taken alone.
“Our organization was founded by families, for families,” said Gaile Osborne, Executive Director of FFA-NC. “We understand how difficult the road can be—not just for children, but for parents, foster families, and everyone involved. When reunification happens, it’s because someone showed up and stayed.”
FFA-NC’s network of caregivers, biological parents, kinship providers, and advocates stretches across all 100 North Carolina counties. From peer mentoring and parenting classes to transitional support services, the alliance plays a unique role in strengthening the ecosystem of care around each family.
The organization also collaborates closely with state and county agencies to ensure that families have the necessary tools before, during, and after reunification. This includes promoting trauma-informed approaches and encouraging collaborative care between foster parents and birth families, both of whom want what’s best for the child.
“Reunification isn’t a finish line—it’s a foundation,” said Osborne. “That’s why we’re committed to lifting up stories of success that often go untold. We want policymakers, community members, and potential foster parents to see what’s possible when families are truly supported.”
