How Jules Verne made his mark on our history

Jules Verne was born on 8^th February 1828 in Nantes, into a wealthy family. At a very young age, he developed a passion for travel and inventions, fuelled by the closeness of the port but also from his prodigious reading. After studying law in Paris, he quickly turned away from the legal career his father wanted for him to devote himself to writing.

He began as a playwright, frequented literary circles, and became interested in science and the inventions of his time. His pivotal meeting with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, in 1862, really launched his career. Together, they created the series of “Extraordinary Voyages”, which made Verne a world-famous author.

His first great success was Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863), followed by masterpieces such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). A visionary, he foresaw submarines, rockets, helicopters, and outlined technology that was ahead of its time, combining adventure, science and education.

Today, Jules Verne is considered one of the pioneers of science fiction. His imagination continues to inspire literature, cinema, contemporary science, but also avant-garde brands such as DS Automobiles.

DS Automobiles has chosen one of four Jules Verne novels to relate to each of its models: DS 3, DS N°4, DS 7 and DS N°8. It is a genuine tribute to the French author, on the 120^th anniversary of his death.

Each model incorporates subtle and evocative references, both outside and inside, through distinctive branding, a special finish and a selection of equipment designed to convey the world of the visionary author.

DS 3 JULES VERNE is an urban SUV designed for modern travellers. On the outside, its first distinctive features are exclusive guilloche and satin chrome badges representing a mysterious sea creature. They also sport the writer’s signature, on a Lazurite Blue bodywork that completes the range of colours currently available. The look and refinement are also expressed through elegant 18-inch diamond-cut Gloss Black wheels, enhanced by a gold-coloured centre cap. The satin chrome door sill trims, also signed, take the shape of the sea creature. DS 3 JULES VERNE is an invitation to get away, into a fantasy world.

Inside, DS 3 JULES VERNE continues its tribute to the depths of the sea with exclusive Eternal Blue and Pearl Alcantara® upholstery reflecting the world of explorers. The pearl-coloured dashboard is adorned with a laser-engraved sea creature motif, in relation to the mysterious world of the famous writer.

A journey in technology

The heated Alcantara® front seats and automatic air conditioning, which come as standard, offer a soft cocoon and a high level of well-being. A subtle detail, the headrests of the front seats have Jules Verne’s signature with Terre de Cassel Beige edging.

DS 3 JULES VERNE enjoys plenty of standard technology to enhance the driving experience. With Proximity Keyless Entry & Start, it unlocks automatically on approaching to within 2 metres. The flush-fitting door handles, which elegantly fit its shape, fold out on their own. In its 100% electric version, DS 3 E-TENSE JULES VERNE has a range of up to 404 km on the WLTP combined cycle and up to 575 km on the urban cycle. Perfect for “all-distance” journeys, charging up to 80% can be carried out in just 30 minutes.

As a self-charging HYBRID, DS 3 JULES VERNE is CO₂ and fuel efficient. It provides up to a 20% reduction in average fuel consumption and allows up to 50% of an urban journey to be driven in all-electric mode.

Three electrified powertrains to choose from

DS N°4 E-TENSE JULES VERNE

DS N°4 JULES VERNE marks a new step forward in DS Automobiles’ energy transition, with a 100% electric powertrain combining a range of 450 km (WLTP combined cycle) and high performance (213 hp and 343 Nm of torque). Designed to adapt to everyday needs, N°4 E-TENSE JULES VERNE is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger as standard and can take DC charging power of up to 120 kW. At a rapid-charging point, it is possible to go from 20 to 80% charge in about 30 minutes, or to recover a range of 100 km in just 11 minutes.

DS N°4 JULES VERNE is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain offering an all-electric range of 81 kilometres (WLTP cycle) increased by 30% compared to the previous generation. Its drivetrain combines a 180 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with a 125 hp electric motor integrated with a new eDCT7 dual-clutch automatic gearbox designed to optimise fuel consumption and performance. With a combined output of 225 hp and 360 Nm of torque, DS N°4 PLUG-IN HYBRID JULES VERNE provides outstanding acceleration, going from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds. Supplied with a 3.7 kW on-board charger, it also offers an optional 7.4 kW version, enabling 100 kilometres range to be added in 11 minutes.

The 145 hp self-charging hybrid version of DS N°4 HYBRID combines a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with a 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor, which is integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With its optimised hybrid architecture, DS N°4 HYBRID JULES VERNE can drive in all-electric mode for up to 50% of the time in urban use, depending on traffic conditions and driving style. Self-charging, it recovers energy from deceleration and braking to power its battery. With torque of 230 Nm, this powertrain ensures first-class performance with low CO₂ emissions (from 116 g/km).

To denote this Collection, an exclusive badge in brushed chrome showing novelist Jules Verne’s signature at the heart of a compass design adorns the front of the vehicle. Exclusive satin chrome guilloche badges represent constellations accompanied by the writer’s signature. DS 7 JULES VERNE is also fitted with 19-inch wheels featuring a gold-coloured centre cap. DS 7 JULES VERNE is available with a choice from two plug-in hybrid powertrains:

PLUG-IN-HYBRID AWD 300 Automatic: 300 hp four-wheel drive for 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, thanks to the combination of a 1.6 petrol engine with 200 hp and two electric motors, one of which is on the rear axle. Combined fuel consumption (WLTP) is restricted to 1.3 l/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of only 30 g/km. DS 7 PLUG-IN-HYBRID AWD 300 Automatic JULES VERNE can travel up to 63 km in all-electric mode.

PLUG-IN-HYBRID 225 Automatic: this two-wheel drive version provides a perfect balance between performance, comfort and fuel efficiency. To finish off this Collection, an exclusive badge with the novelist’s signature encircled by a compass design adorns the front of N°8 JULES VERNE.
