AECOM celebrates landmark $48M extension of the Schuylkill River Trail in Philadelphia
Project includes a 650-foot-long cable-stayed bridge—the first of its kind in Pennsylvania—along with 1,200 feet of boardwalk approach structure and 2,800 feet of trail on grade.
AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, recently celebrated the opening of the extended Schuylkill River Trail in Philadelphia from Christian Street to Grays Ferry Crescent. AECOM was awarded the design contract in 2016 and has been involved in the trail extension project from the initial feasibility study through to final design and construction. The firm has played a pivotal role in advancing this major milestone in the city’s pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
The extended trail enhances connectivity by providing an entirely off-road route between Center City and Grays Ferry Crescent. By encouraging non-motorized transportation, it helps reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions while attracting visitors and boosting local businesses. The project also improves public safety by linking previously disconnected trail segments into a continuous and separate pathway.
“The extension of the Schuylkill River Trail represents a transformative investment in Philadelphia’s transportation and recreation infrastructure,” said Sam Donelson, chief executive of AECOM’s U.S. East and Latin America region. “We are proud to have played a pivotal role in designing and delivering this world-class facility that will serve the community for generations.”
AECOM also developed innovative solutions to navigate industrial sites, railroads, overhead bridges, and major utilities through a tidal river while ensuring long-term durability and minimal maintenance. The bridge’s lattice-patterned cables pay homage to the Brooklyn Bridge, adding an iconic landmark to Philadelphia’s urban landscape.
“This project is a testament to AECOM’s commitment to creating resilient, sustainable infrastructure that enhances urban mobility and improves quality of life,” said Michael Girman, regional business line leader AECOM’s Transportation business in the Mid-Atlantic. “By delivering innovative solutions tailored to the unique challenges of this site, we have helped shape a trail that will serve as a vital community asset for years to come.”
