“Becoming a Religious Sister: Erik Erikson and Donald Winnicott in Dialogue” — A Groundbreaking Psychological and Spiritual Exploration of Religious Vocation
In her thought-provoking new book, “Becoming a Religious Sister: Erik Erikson and Donald Winnicott in Dialogue,” Sister Dr. Patience Quayson brings together decades of religious life and advanced psychological study to examine what it truly means to answer the call to serve the Lord as a spiritual sister.
With over 40 years of experience as a religious sister—including three decades as a vocation director—Sister Dr. Quayson uses her deep understanding of faith, human development, and psychoanalysis to provide an honest, compassionate, and scholarly look at the inner and outer challenges faced by women entering religious life.
Drawing from the theories of Erik Erikson and Donald Winnicott, two renowned figures in developmental psychology, the book explores the emotional maturity, self-awareness, and psychological readiness required to thrive in a convent setting. Through this lens, Sister Dr.
Quayson raises essential questions: What motivates a woman to dedicate her life to God? What psychological factors help or hinder her vocation? How do past experiences influence her ability to live out her calling with integrity and joy?
In addition to highlighting the blessings of religious service, the book does not shy away from the often-overlooked realities: strained interpersonal dynamics, ineffective leadership practices, arbitrary dismissals of younger sisters, and emotional tolls that can accompany convent life.
By integrating theology, pastoral psychology, and lived experience, “Becoming a Religious Sister” offers a vital resource for spiritual directors, vocation promoters, church leaders, mental health professionals, and women discerning religious life.
