Funding available for digital tools for arts practitioners in Akron, Miami and Detroit

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation today announced the opening of the latest application cycle for its Knight Art + Tech Expansion Fund, a grant opportunity designed to help artists and arts organizations build digital capacity and strengthen their use of technology. Artists, arts organizations and collectives based in Akron, Detroit and Miami are eligible to apply. 

The fund provides support for the technological tools, infrastructure and expertise necessary for arts practitioners to sustain and expand their digital practices. 

Individual artists may request up to $25,000, while organizations or collectives may request up to $100,000 in funding. Applications are open from May 1 to June 20, 2025.

To support potential applicants, Knight Foundation will host a series of virtual information sessions and offer one-on-one office hours to answer questions and provide guidance on the application process. Interested applicants can learn more, register for an information session, book office hours and apply.

Eligible applicants include individual artists, nonprofit arts organizations and arts collectives based in Akron, Detroit or Miami-Dade County.

Funding categories include:

• Purchase and installation of hardware and/or software

• Technology infrastructure (e.g., live streaming, networking, outdoor projection)

• Staffing or contract support (e.g., developers, videographers, digital content managers)

• Website or mobile app development

• Digitization, archiving and digital preservation

The Knight Art + Tech Expansion Fund reflects Knight Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the arts as a vital part of thriving communities. Since 2005, the foundation has invested more than $490 million to help artists and arts organizations create stronger and more vibrant communities.
