UNESCO’s dedication to creating a safer and more nurturing learning environment on campuses

Higher and tertiary education campuses serve as dynamic hubs for thousands of students, filled with aspiring individuals determined to thrive academically and positively impact society

For over three years, UNESCO’s O3Plus project has supported Tanzania’s efforts to guarantee that young individuals in Higher and Tertiary Education Institutions (HTEIs) achieve favorable health, educational, and gender equality outcomes by significantly reducing new HIV infections, unintended pregnancies, and instances of sexual and gender-based violence.

From April 22 to April 25, 2025, UNESCO, in partnership with the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups (MoCDGWSG), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoEST), and other key stakeholders, hosted a four-day Technical Meeting aimed at enhancing the implementation of gender desks in higher and tertiary education institutions.

I’m glad to be part of the field visit. I’ve learned how important it is for gender desks to be located in safe and accessible places, so that students feel comfortable and confident to report any issues. - MozaStudent, Institute of Social Work

The meeting centered on developing key performance indicators for gender desks, training coordinators to provide them with fundamental counseling skills, assessing progress made thus far, and sharing innovative digital solutions for GBV case reporting and management.

As part of the training, participants visited four institutions in Morogoro to gain practical insights into the operation of their gender desks.

Gender desks in higher learning institutions play a vital role in preventing and responding to gender-based violence. Just their presence serves as a reassuring signal, helping to create safer and more welcoming environments. They offer a trusted and accessible way for students and staff to report incidents, especially for those who might feel uncomfortable approaching the police. By blending safety with education, these institutions not only promote academic excellence but also prioritize the well-being of every student. - Gift MsowoyaGender Coordinator, Higher Learning – MoCDGWSGs

To date, UNESCO’s O3Plus project has facilitated the establishment and functioning of 24 gender desks in higher and tertiary education institutions across Tanzania.
