“Piper Finds Her Special,” A Heartwarming Book by Alison Keenan - A Story of Purpose, Unconditional Love, and the Healing Power of Therapy Dogs
What goes on in the mind of a therapy dog? How does a dog discover its purpose in the world? In her inspiring children’s book, Piper Finds Her Special, author Alison Keenan takes readers on a heartwarming journey inside the mind of Piper, a therapy dog who discovers the joy and importance of helping others through a unique reading program for children.
“Piper Finds Her Special” shares an incredible story of love, hope, and purpose based on the real-life story of Piper and her owner Alison. The unique relationship between a dog and her owner, who have both fought and survived significant medical challenges, is brought out in the book. After receiving a rare blood cancer diagnosis in 2014, Alison and Piper started a therapy dog team that has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals throughout Lebanon, Tennessee, and beyond.
Since joining Intermountain Therapy Animals of Salt Lake City as a registered therapy team, Piper and Alison have worked together to bring comfort and assistance to hospitals, care facilities, libraries, and behavioral health clinics. Their work is rooted in the belief that despite life’s challenges, each day can be the BEST day. This philosophy, known as the “Piper Principle,” encourages living in the moment and making each experience the best it can be, a lesson both Alison and Piper have embraced in their own lives.
More than the story about a therapy dog, “Piper Finds Her Special” is a reflection of both the significance of giving back to one’s community and the therapeutic potential of unconditional love. Through their therapy work, Piper and Alison have established themselves as essential members of the children’s programs at the Lebanon-Wilson County Public Library’s children’s programs, as well as a vital presence in local behavioral health clinics and hospitals. Their work with the READ® program helps children build confidence and improve their reading skills while offering emotional support in a safe, compassionate environment.
The book teaches young readers about the value of therapy animals in helping those in need while also bringing them the joy of Piper’s story. Children who are interested in the world of therapy animals and who adore animals, particularly dogs, will find it to be an ideal book. With every page, “Piper Finds Her Special” reminds us that we all have a purpose and that sometimes, it takes a dog to show us just how special life can be.
