IBM and OnRelay Deliver Fixed Mobile Convergence for Wavefield Inseis

WEBWIRE

IBM (NYSE: IBM) has designed and deployed an integrated fixed and mobile convergence solution for Wavefield Inseis (OSLO: WAVE), a leading Norwegian seismic data acquisition specialist. The new solution replaces a mobile centrex system with a company-wide IP telephony solution with full mobile integration.

IBM network consultants led the project and provided the services needed to integrate the components into one coherent solution. IBM provided a suite of assessment, design, integration and deployment services based upon the IBM Converged Communications Services - IP telephony service product.

The mobility solution was provided by IBM business partner OnRelay, which IBM Global Services seamlessly integrated with the Cisco Unified Communications Manager IP telephony platform. OnRelay MBX mobile integration will provide each person with one phone number, regardless of where the person happens to be located. OnRelay allows enterprises to use a mobile phone as the only PBX extension.

“We see a clear demand for mobile integration in every single converged communication solution that we discuss with our clients. The Nordic countries are definitely out front here. Our clients need a fixed and mobile converged communications solution to support their global business model,” said Terje Thue Rolland, business manager of IBM Converged Communications Services for IBM Norway.

IBM has provided Wavefield with a more cost-effective solution, moving traffic from public networks to the corporate network. Moreover, cost savings may be obtained by initiating calls from the office, especially if combined with local gateways and the lowest cost routing solution. One telephone operator can handle calls for multiple sites, providing the possibility of extended hours of service by utilizing operators in different time zones (e.g., by handling calls in Houston when offices in Norway are closed).

Wavefield Inseis has grown from about 30 employees in Norway to nearly 200 employees worldwide in less than a year and needed a solution that fully supported the needs of its fast growing international organisation.

“Providing the best available communication means to our employees is very important for us,” said Jan Vidar Nordstrand, IT manager for Wavefield Inseis. “We had outgrown our existing communication service and the IBM solution is a key enabler for us. It provides us with more efficient internal communication by eventually integrating all sites into the same system.”

The deal was signed in 4Q 2006, and the implementation of the system was concluded in March 2007.
