AIM calls for action to protect the single market amid trade disruption

WEBWIRE

AIM, the European Brands Association, expresses deep concern and disappointment following the US government’s announcement last night of a sweeping 20% tariff on all goods exported from the European Union to the United States. Such a unilateral move risks exacerbating already fragile global trade relations and will bring no benefit to consumers on either side of the Atlantic.

The consumer goods sector is one of Europe’s economic pillars, with 39% of our production—valued at €175 billion—destined for export beyond EU borders. These newly imposed tariffs represent a serious threat to the health and competitiveness of European industry. Our brands, already operating in a climate of persistent supply chain volatility, now face further uncertainty and disruption.

As highlighted in our latest Consumer Goods Barometer, businesses are navigating a complex web of global instability. The spectre of an international trade war in 2025 will only amplify these challenges. In this context, the strength and integrity of the EU Single Market have never been more essential. With €276 billion worth of goods moving annually within the EU, it is imperative that efforts to improve the smooth functioning of the Single Market remain a priority.

As external trading conditions become more difficult, we urge EU institutions and Member States to refocus on safeguarding the Single Market by removing existing barriers and ensuring a fair-trading environment for all producers in Europe’s vital supply chains. Legislative priorities should be viewed through a crisis-management lens. Strategic focus and agility will be crucial to ensure that public and private resources are deployed effectively to shield Europe’s economic fabric.

“Above all, European brand manufacturers reaffirm their unwavering commitment to European consumers. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and surging inflation, our industry has consistently stood by consumers through adversity. We will do so again. By working collaboratively across our value chains, we aim to minimise disruption and maintain access to trusted and cherished brands in the months ahead.” Michelle Gibbons, Director General
