New BLS Reports on Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Deaths and Resources to Protect Workers
CTSI provides industrial hygiene (IH) and environmental, health, and safety (EHS) consulting, testing, and training services to identify and mitigate risks in the workplace, while helping employers achieve regulatory compliance goals.
It’s important to recognize that each injury, illness, or death represents an individual, and is a reminder that employers are required by law to provide a safe work environment for all their workers.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries that covers 2023. Sadly, there were 5,283 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States that year. The good news is that is a 3.7 percent decrease from the 5,486 in 2022.
Key findings from the 2023 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:
- A worker died every 99 minutes from a work-related injury in 2023 compared to every 96 minutes in 2022.
- The fatal work injury rate was 3.5 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, down from 3.7 per 100,000 FTE in 2022.
- In New York, where CTSI has an office, there were 246 fatal injuries, down from 251 in 2022. In Florida, where CTSI has another office, there were 306 fatal injuries, down from the 307 in 2022.
“BLS also published its latest account of employer-reported workplace injuries and illnesses for 2023,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “Fortunately, there has also been a decrease in injuries and illnesses. Private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, down 8.4 percent from 2022. It’s important to recognize that each injury, illness, or death represents an individual, and is a reminder that employers are required by law to provide a safe work environment for all their workers.”
To help in this effort, the industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals at CTSI are dedicated to working with employers to help prevent occupational accidents, injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Their experts offer workplace assessments, testing, training, and consulting services to identify and mitigate safety issues and exposure risks to infectious agents, chemicals, regulated substances, and radiological threats. These services are conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
