How American Express is Backing Customers, Businesses and Communities Affected by the California Wildfires
In response to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, American Express is continuing to support our customers, merchants and communities impacted by this unprecedented natural disaster.
The situation on the ground is evolving, and while we are grateful that our American Express colleagues in the region are safe, some of our colleagues are currently displaced, and we will support them through this incredibly difficult time. We are also offering support to those directly or indirectly impacted by this disaster, including free counseling services for colleagues and their families.
Backing Our Communities
To support the immediate relief and recovery efforts, American Express is committing over $5 million in funding towards the following initiatives:
- Alongside our longstanding partner Hilton, American Express is committing $2 million that will go towards making 20,000 hotel room nights available at no charge to impacted people across the greater Los Angeles area.
- The American Express Foundation has committed $500,000 to organizations providing emergency relief, shelter, health services, and meals, including The American Red Cross, International Medical Corps, and World Central Kitchen. The American Express Foundation is also matching eligible colleague donations to organizations supporting relief efforts.
- American Express businesses Resy and Tock will contribute an additional $200,000 to World Central Kitchen, which is on the frontlines working to provide meals and immediate relief in impacted areas.
- As part of The American Express Golf Tournament, American Express will contribute at least $300,000 to Feeding America and the California Fire Foundation. The company is also hosting a community event with FIND Food Bank in Coachella Valley to pack and donate food and other supplies to be distributed to those in need across Los Angeles.
- American Express is sponsoring FireAid, a music industry effort to come together and help raise money for LA communities devastated by wildfires on January 30, at the Intuit Dome and Kia Forum. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, January 22 at 12:00 p.m. PST on Ticketmaster.
Backing Our Customers and Merchants
In addition to supporting community relief efforts, American Express is providing immediate assistance for its Card Members and merchants located in the LA-area affected by the wildfires. For help or questions about if you qualify for assistance, please reach out to Customer Service via the Amex app, online chat, merchant login, or the number on the back of your card. Measures we are taking include:
- Temporarily waiving or refunding late fees and returned payment fees for its U.S. Consumer, Small Business and Corporate Card Members most directly impacted by the fires.
- Temporarily extending dispute response timeframes for American Express-accepting merchants that have direct card acceptance relationships with us.
- Temporarily rebating the merchant discount rate for charitable contributions made on American Express Cards to the American Red Cross, as it continues to support the California wildfires.
- Temporarily waiving monthly fees for all Resy and Tock restaurants in affected areas. For help or questions about the Resy and Tock fee waivers, please reach out to resysupport@resy.com if you are a Resy partner, or hospitality@tockhq.com if you are a Tock partner.
Los Angeles is home to many of our colleagues, customers and merchant partners. American Express is committed to continuing to support the immediate needs and long-term rebuilding efforts in communities affected by these wildfires.
