Metrorail Riders to Recycle

In celebration of Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is teaming up with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and other partners to encourage morning rail commuters to recycle their newspapers. Volunteers from EPA will be assisting commuters in recycling their newspapers at seven Metrorail stations spanning the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland on Friday, April 20, 2007. Area youth groups have decorated the newspaper recycling bins at the Metro stations and volunteers from the District Department of Public Works, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Arlington County will be available to answer commuters’ recycling questions.

WMATA currently recycles approximately 200 tons of newspaper a month. Typical weekday Metrorail ridership is more than a half million commuters.
