New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Barnes & Noble announces The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus as their January National Book Club pick and welcomes readers to join author Emma Knight at a free live virtual event on Tuesday, February 4th at 3PM ET. The author will be in conversation with Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction at Barnes & Noble to discuss the title as well as answer questions from audience members. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the livestream on Zoom.

“Emma Knight’s The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus is a gem of a novel that I can’t wait to share with our Book Club readers,” said Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction at Barnes & Noble. “Our heroine, Pen, a young Canadian woman starting her first year at University of Edinburgh, is determined to uncover the secrets she believes her divorced parents are keeping from her. Searching for answers, she finds herself swept up in the wealthy and eccentric family of Lord Lennox, a famous writer and friend of her father. Both a campus novel and a story of pastoral wealth reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh, this warm, funny, and sparkling novel will give readers so much to talk about. I’m so excited for readers to meet Pen and cozy up in her unforgettable world.”

Emma Knight’s debut fiction novel of forged friendships, newfound loves and unforgotten family secrets is the very first B&N Book Club selection of 2025. Throughout her adolescence, Pen was plagued by unanswered questions surrounding her parents’ seemingly loveless marriage. Now, starting at university in Edinburgh, she decides to delve even deeper into those lingering curiosities that she’s carried with her into adulthood.

The Barnes & Noble Book Club showcases a newly published work of fiction each month, chosen by their booksellers to provoke, engage and enthrall book lovers. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus features special cover effects and end papers, as well as an exclusive essay from the author herself.

“I’m wildly excited that Barnes & Noble has chosen The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus as its January book club pick,” said author Emma Knight. “I know few greater pleasures than wandering through the thoughtfully arranged aisles of a Barnes & Noble, saying hello to old friends and finding new ones. Each time I visit I stay for far longer than planned and need to be extracted by a family member. Thank you, Barnes & Noble team, for everything you do for readers and writers. What a thrilling way to begin the new year!”

Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream, readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.

The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
