Symantec Becomes Global Data Protection Standard for Sun Microsystems

WEBWIRE

Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Sun Microsystems will standardize on Symantec’s Veritas NetBackup software throughout its enterprise. Sun will use NetBackup to streamline IT operations, increase database and application availability, and improve data protection. The adoption of NetBackup is part of Sun’s Integrated Business Information Solution (IBIS), an initiative focused on better managing and optimizing its global environment with standardized products and solutions.

“As a critical part of our IBIS strategy, we expect NetBackup to help us reduce the cost and complexity of our data center environment,” said Gordon McGowan, IT operations director, Sun Microsystems. “NetBackup’s centralized network protection and scalability will help us keep pace with our rapidly growing data volumes and simplify our data protection strategy. We also expect that NetBackup will significantly reduce costs and drive operational efficiencies in our data centers.”

“Sun is more than a trusted partner, they are a valued customer,” said Matt Kixmoeller, senior director, product management, Symantec. “Utilizing the unparalleled features and functionality of the NetBackup platform will give Sun the ability to more efficiently and effectively meet their growing data protection demands, while making full use of cutting-edge disk and tape-based data protection technologies.”

By centralizing all aspects of the backup and recovery process through a single management console, NetBackup will help Sun increase backup efficiency and streamline backup performance. The NetBackup Vault option will enable Sun to simplify the disaster recovery process by automating tape rotation, and creating and managing tape duplicates for offsite vaulting. With the help of NetBackup’s virtual tape support, the Bare Metal Restore option, and inline copies, Sun will also maximize backup performance, simplify system recovery, and reduce exposure to data loss.
