Rolls-Royce RB211 gas compression packages ordered for Canadian gas pipeline

Rolls-Royce has received orders for three RB211 gas turbine packages from Union Gas Ltd of Ontario, Canada, for use on its natural gas pipeline network. These consist of two 38,000 horsepower RB211-6562 DLE (Dry Low Emissions) mechanical drive packages and one RB211-6761 DLE compressor set rated at 44,500 horsepower.

The two RB211-6562 units will replace two Rolls-Royce Avon-powered packages that have been running at the Bright compressor station since 1974. Included in the contract are new rotor bundles for the two Rolls-Royce RFBB36 centrifugal pipeline compressors currently powered by the Avon units. An existing RB211 compression package, installed in 1990, will also continue to operate at the Bright station.

The RB211-6761 gas turbine will power two Rolls-Royce RFBB42 pipeline centrifugal compressors in tandem, and will be installed at the Dawn compressor station alongside five RB211 compression packages that have been operating at the station since as early as 1978. Rolls-Royce centrifugal gas compressors are among the most efficient available in the marketplace today.

These latest orders follow one received in mid-2006 for an RB211-6761 DLE compression package to be installed at the Union Gas Parkway B station. The unit will join an Avon-driven package installed at Parkway in 1988.

The three compressor stations provide natural gas transmission service throughout the year. In the winter, gas is transported east from the Dawn storage facility to Toronto for residential and commercial use. During the summer months, gas is transported west from a TransCanada pipeline, back to Dawn for storage.

“We are pleased to continue to be a major equipment supplier to Union Gas,” said Tom Curley, president of the energy business of Rolls-Royce. “Our relationship with Union Gas dates back to the early 1970’s. We are very proud of our performance record with this important customer, and the role we have played over the years to help Union Gas meet the growing needs of its customer base.”

With an overall efficiency in excess of 40 per cent, the RB211 engine is well- suited for natural gas compression applications like those of Union Gas, which involve hundreds of miles of pipe to bring gas reserves to the marketplace.

The latest version of the RB211 gas turbine package, the RB211-6761, provides a significant increase in power over previous versions, with reduced fuel consumption and lower levels of exhaust emissions.

The gas compressor packages will be assembled at the Rolls-Royce facility at Mount Vernon, Ohio for delivery to the three sites in the third quarter 2008. The RB211 engines will be manufactured at the Rolls-Royce facility in Montreal, Canada.
