CTO Hiroaki Kitano to Give Keynote Address at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024

Sony Group Corporation (Sony) today announced its participation as a sponsor in SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, which will be held at Tokyo International Forum in Chiyoda, Tokyo from December 3 to 6, 2024. Hiroaki Kitano, Executive Deputy President and CTO, will give the keynote address on December 5.

Seven technologies in a wide variety of domains from Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (Sony CSL), Sony Interactive Entertainment, Inc. (SIE), and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) will be presented at the conference.

Kitano’s keynote address will focus on how new technology is utilized in the process of creating intricate worlds that the creators envision. CTO Hiroaki Kitano will invite creators in game design, animation and filmmaking from across Sony to join him in presenting technical breakthroughs that are creating all-new possibilities for storytelling. Kitano and the creators will touch on various topics, from PlayStation’s 30-year history of technical evolution, to today’s convergence of cutting-edge production techniques in film and animation at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Four demo presentations from the Sony Group companies were accepted in the Emerging Technologies exhibition, which will showcase innovative interactive technologies, and three poster presentations were accepted for the poster exhibition.

• Sony CSL focuses on creating a better future through research activities that respect the intellectual freedom and diverse perspectives of its researchers.
  At the conference, Sony CSL will demonstrate the following: Ninja Codes (Yuichiro Takeuchi, et al), which are 2D codes for location tracking that can be hidden in arbitrary images and blend naturally into real-world environments; and the AgiLimb system (Shunichi Kasahara and Meiji University), which enables humans to operate a robot as if it were their own body, transcending their own physical abilities while still maintaining a sense of agency.
  The two posters from Sony CSL (Jun Rekimoto, et al) will showcase: a new method for reconstructing 3D scenes by eliminating unnecessary static and dynamic distractors from image capture of busy areas; and Jaku-in, a tea ceremony room with 3D spatiotemporal recording capability, which will support the transfer of traditional skills and manners.
• SIE will demonstrate an experimental controller that can be reconfigured and shaped to suit the application content through LED lighting guidance, enabling a variety of operations. SIE will also demo an experimental head-mounted display system that achieves both an expansive horizontal viewing angle and high resolution, along with multiple lenses and displays, combined with real-time image correction.
• The SSS poster presentation will showcase applied technology that reads and decodes audio data embedded in video, using technology that synchronizes a camera with a display (joint research with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology).

Sony is participating as a Creative Visionary Sponsor, showcasing technologies that support creativity. The Sony exhibition booth will feature a range of technologies, including a 360-degree transparent light field display, which allows multiple people to enjoy 3D images from all around, as well as various new prototypes of Spatial Reality Display which provide incredibly realistic 3D viewing experience without special glasses.
