OSHA’s Top 10 Citations for Fiscal Year 2024 and Resources to Protect Workers
The industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals at Clark Seif Clark, Inc. (CSC) provide consulting, testing, and training services to identify and mitigate occupational exposure hazards.
More important than profit, schedule, or production rates is the collective commitment of ensuring all employees return home from work alive and with all their various parts intact.
Each year, millions of workers are injured or develop occupational illnesses. Sadly, as recently as 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were also 5,486 fatal occupational injuries that year alone.
Employers are responsible for providing safe working conditions for all of their employees. To protect workers, there are a number of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards that are enforced by the agency. A list of the 10 most frequently cited safety and health violations is released annually to help build awareness of areas that need to be given greater attention.
OSHA’s preliminary Top 10 Citations list for fiscal year 2024 includes:
- Fall Protection - General Requirements (6,307 violations)
- Hazard Communication (2,888 violations)
- Ladders (2,573 violations)
- Respiratory Protection (2,470 violations)
- Lockout/Tagout (2,443 violations)
- Powered Industrial Trucks (2,248 violations)
- Fall Protection - Training Requirements (2,050 violations)
- Scaffolding (1,873 violations)
- Personal Protective and Life Saving Equipment – Eye and Face Protection (1,814 violations)
- Machine Guarding (1,541 violations)
“More important than profit, schedule, or production rates is the collective commitment of ensuring all employees return home from work alive and with all their various parts intact. As far back as the OSH Act of 1970 it is abundantly clear that safety is everyone’s responsibility. Employers must provide a workplace free from recognized hazards that cause, or are likely to cause, death or serious harm, and each employee must comply with occupational safety and health regulations and rules issued. Failures by the employer and/or the employee will result in bad outcomes,” said Derrick A. Denis, Industrial Hygienist and Senior Vice President for Clark Seif Clark, Inc. “The OSHA top 10 citations list has not really changed year over year. If employers are looking for ways to reduce risk to their team members, to their pocketbook, and to their reputation, they would be wise to develop initiatives focused on these 10 important safety items. At CSC, we can help. Our industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals are dedicated to helping businesses and institutions protect their workforce and comply with federal and state OSHA regulations. Our experts specialize in testing, monitoring, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate risks.”
