InnerPlant’s CropVoice™ Named to TIME’s List of The Best Inventions of 2024
Novel insights platform translates plant physiology into early fungal alert system for soybean farmers, allowing crops to communicate when they are under attack from fungus
InnerPlant, the seed technology company engineering crops that communicate their needs, today announced that CropVoice™, its novel fungal insights platform, has been named to the TIME Best Inventions 2024 list. CropVoice is recognized in the Agriculture Category for helping farmers enhance crop yields with early detection of fungal disease in soybeans.
“Agriculture is one of humanity’s most critical endeavors, as it impacts every person on our planet,” said Shely Aronov, CEO and co-founder of Innerplant. “CropVoice provides farmers, for the first time in agriculture’s 10,000-year history, with actionable data directly from plants, so they know exactly what they need and when. This early detection system tied directly to plants’ physiological responses, enables farmers to take early action that will protect yields, decrease chemical use, and improve the resiliency of their farms. TIME’s recognition of CropVoice as a leading invention puts the agriculture industry and our farmers in the spotlight, where they should be.”
The CropVoice platform taps a network of sentinel plots featuring InnerSoy™. This first-of-its-kind soybean fungal sensor unlocks data tied directly to the soybeans’ natural immune response and is engineered to emit an optical signal–detectable as far away as space–within 48 hours of infection. InnerSoy data is analyzed using advanced predictive models to provide farmers with the earliest and most definitive detection of fungal infection. Because CropVoice signals are tied to plants’ physiological responses–rather than gathered externally by synthetic sensors–the platform alerts farmers to crop fungal stress up to six weeks before other scouting methods.
CropVoice is a pivotal first step in InnerPlant’s technology journey to “every seed.” In 2025, the CropVoice network is expected to cover hundreds of thousands of soy acres across Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska–with coverage continuing to expand in 2026 and beyond.
TIME’s annual list of the Best Inventions features 200 extraordinary innovations changing the world around us. Winners were chosen on a number of key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact. Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions)—including the world’s largest computer chip, a humanoid robot joining the workforce, and a bioluminescent houseplant—that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”
