Children’s Health Month in Puerto Rico and Preventing Exposure Risks to Environmental Hazards
Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor air quality and environmental testing and consulting services to identify and safeguard against exposure to microbial, chemical, and radiological dangers.
Unfortunately, there are still places in Puerto Rico and across the region where children come in contact with lead, asbestos, mold, volatile organic compounds, and other potentially harmful materials
October is recognized as National Children’s Health Month in Puerto Rico and across the nation. The theme for this year is Growing Healthy, Growing Happy.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
Children are often more vulnerable to pollutants than adults due to differences in behavior and biology, and these differences can lead to greater exposure and/or unique windows of susceptibility.
Each week of the month has been dedicated to an area of focus. This has included a week on healthy spaces, such as in homes, schools, childcare facilities, playgrounds, and other spaces where children spend most of their time. Another week has focused on lead hazards and the importance of having children tested for it, as well as having homes inspected for exposure risks.
These are important areas of focus as EPA warns that children’s nervous, immune response, digestive, and other bodily systems are still developing and are more easily harmed by exposure to dangerous substances. Children also eat more food, drink more fluids, and breathe more air than adults in proportion to their body size. The behavior of children, such as crawling and placing objects in their mouths, can also increase their risk of environmental exposures.
“Unfortunately, there are still places in Puerto Rico and across the region where children come in contact with lead, asbestos, mold, volatile organic compounds, and other potentially harmful materials,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “To protect children and families, the professionals at Zimmetry provide indoor and outdoor environmental testing and consulting services. We identify and mitigate exposure to a wide range of microbial, chemical, and radiological hazards. Our experts help to create healthy environments for children in and around their homes, schools, daycare centers, playgrounds, and other locations.”
Several years ago, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
