Assessing Property Damage and Exposure Risks Following Hurricane Milton
CTSI provides environmental and industrial hygiene testing, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate indoor and outdoor environmental hazards following storm damage.
To add insult to injury, many of these same buildings suffered water damage just a few weeks prior due to Hurricane Helene.
A massive hurricane brought destruction to large parts of Florida last week for the second time in only a few weeks. Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall, tore across the state from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic. It knocked out power to millions, and tragically, caused a number of deaths due to storm surge, torrential rain, powerful wind gusts, and tornadoes.
A Major Disaster Declaration was declared for Florida last week, making federal disaster assistance available to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Milton. This is good news as countless properties have been severely damaged.
In Milton’s aftermath, people are left with the task of assessing the damage to homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. As time progresses, it’s important that residents recognize that mold will have begun to grow in less than 48 hours on many of the water damaged building materials, furnishings, and personal belongings that remained wet. While some nonporous materials can be cleaned and salvaged, most porous materials will need to be discarded. Asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paints found in many older buildings also need to be handled properly or they could become aerosolized and pose a hazard to anyone in the area.
“In addition to mold issues, flooding and storm surge can also bring bacteria, sewage, and chemicals into a building,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “To add insult to injury, many of these same buildings suffered water damage just a few weeks prior due to Hurricane Helene.”
To help in the recovery efforts, building science and industrial hygiene professionals from CTSI are in Florida to help building owners and facility managers evaluate the damage. The experts at CTSI’s Tampa office can assess the damage and exposure risks, and help to ensure demolition, repair, and rebuilding activities are done safely. These services can protect workers and building occupants from exposure risks to mold, bacteria, sewage, chemicals, asbestos, lead, and more.
