“In spite of hardships along the way, he lived so the light of Christ within him shone brightly in a time when light was so desperately needed. Surely, he was an example of what is good and right in a world divided between good and evil and right and wrong, even today.” Rev. Henry Caldwell, Columbia, SC native, Pastor of First Church of God Ministries of Raleigh, NC
A book on the life of South Carolina Civil War veteran James Lide Coker, “God, Guts, and Gallantry: The Faith, Courage, and Accomplishments of Major James Lide Coker,” by Dr. Will Joslin, will be displayed by ReadersMagnet at stands GG40 and GG42 from November 30 to December 4, 2024.
The Guadalajara International Book Fair features a wide array of activities, including book presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and cultural performances. It serves as a crucial platform for literary exchange, attracting authors, publishers, literary agents, and book lovers from around the globe. The Guadalajara International Book Fair 2024 will be held from November 30 to December 8, 2024, at the Expo Guadalajara, Av. Mariano Otero 1499, Colonia Verde Valle, Guadalajara, Jalisco, México.
Avid readers of biographies, especially of those written about Civil War figures, will be glad to find “God, Guts, and Gallantry.” The book tells the faith, courage, and accomplishments of Major James Lide Coker, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Coker defended his homeland, fighting with Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in Virginia, where his brother was killed. During one battle in Tennessee, he sustained a shattered left thigh and became a POW. On his return home to Hartsville, South Carolina, he found out his plantation was destroyed by the troops of Union General William Sherman, and his livestock was driven or taken away.
Despite having become lame for life and suffered terrible property loss, Coker had an overcoming redemptive vision. He rebounded to rebuild his life and fortune and intentionally built up the people of his region, white, and black, brightening their hopes for this life and the next as he transformed his region, economically and spiritually. He would eventually become the wealthiest man in South Carolina, yet he remained humble and down to earth as he taught the boys Sunday School for 38 years.
Not many books have been written about Confederate figures, but Coker was unlike any other Confederate. A patriot in the mold of John S. Mosby, he disapproved of slavery, and washed his hands of it as soon as he could. A progressive in race relations, he created employment opportunities for African Americans. In his own book on the Civil War, he wrote the following words: “There is one great result of the war between the States for which we are truly thankful: slavery is abolished.”
Unlike almost any other Civil War veteran of his time; he was way ahead of his time. His story deserves to be told and shared widely. “God, Guts, and Gallantry” will endear today’s youth and the trailblazers of tomorrow to a man who had lived a selfless and purposeful Christian life. Coker’s life is proof that one can attain spotless success in life while adhering to Christian principles and service.
