When used properly, respirators can dramatically help to prevent occupational illnesses and deaths.

Respiratory protection makes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) top ten list of the most frequently cited safety and health violations almost every year. For 2023, it was the seventh most frequently cited standard, the third most in 2022, second most in 2021, and it was ranked third in 2020.

This is a bad news as millions of workers from across the country, and in a wide range of occupations, are required to wear respirators while performing various tasks to protect against injuries, illnesses, and even fatal exposure risks.

Recognizing the vital role that respiratory protection plays in protecting workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) annually promotes Respiratory Protection Week to encourage proper respiratory protection practices. For 2024, the weekly observance takes place from September 3rd through the 6th.

“When used properly, respirators can dramatically help to prevent occupational illnesses and deaths,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico, respiratory protection standards for most workers are enforced by the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Administration (PR OSHA). Federal OSHA enforces it for some workers not covered by PR OSHA. Respiratory protection standards exist for general industry, maritime, and construction. Compliance with PR OSHA and Federal OSHA respiratory protection standards not only safeguards workers, it can also prevent costly noncompliance penalties.”

The industrial hygiene, infection control, and air quality experts at Zimmetry provide the resources that companies, institutions, and government agencies in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean depend upon for identifying and mitigating exposure risks to airborne hazards. Their experts help to ensure that workers are properly protected with respirators and other personal protective equipment through consulting, training, testing, and monitoring services. Zimmetry also offers mask fit testing services, air testing, engineering control assessments, employee hazard communications, and compliance and management system audits.

Several years ago, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about Respiratory Protection Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/S2bve-BXW78
