Palmer nominated for prestigious PFA prize
Cole Palmer’s brilliant 2023/24 campaign has been recognised by his peers as he has made the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.
Palmer’s nomination for the Young Player prize was announced yesterday and he is now also in the running for the main award, voted for by his fellow Premier League players.
It comes off the back of an outstanding first season at Chelsea in which Palmer scored 22 league goals and recorded 11 more, registering more goal involvements than any other Premier League player in the process.
Memorably he scored hat-tricks in consecutive home games in April, against Manchester United and Everton, with his four-goal haul in the later containing the league’s earliest ‘perfect’ treble.
Palmer belied his youth and inexperience to lead the Chelsea attack with distinction, playing a vital role as we surged up the table to finish in a European spot.
Palmer is up against the holder of the award, Erling Haaland, his Man City teammates Phil Foden and Rodri, Martin Odegaard of Arsenal and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
The victor will be announced on 20 August at this year’s PFA Awards ceremony in Manchester. Palmer is hoping to follow John Terry (2005), Eden Hazard (2015) and N’Golo Kante (2017) in winning the award while a Chelsea player.
