NASA Awards Contract for "Green" Exploration Sciences Building

GREENBELT, Md. - NASA has awarded a contract to Manhattan Construction Company of Fairfax, Va., for the construction of the Exploration Sciences Building at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The firm fixed price for the basic requirement is approximately $54 million; the price for the options is approximately $1.2 million; with an approximate total price of $56 million if all options are exercised.

The basic contract consists of construction of the base building and site utilities with options to add demountable partitions at lab module lines; gypsum wall board partitions at lab module lines; computer room air conditioning units; bitumen roof system; blast walls at the hazardous storage; an uninterruptible power system; and information technology cable trays for offices.

The three-story office and laboratory building is designed as U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED (R)), Silver structure. The LEED (R) Green Building Rating System (TM) is a voluntary building certification program that defines high-performance green buildings that are environmentally responsible and healthier structures.

NASA has determined that all new facilities projects will reach the Silver rating. The Silver rating signifies a high level of commitment to designing, procuring, and installing environmentally friendly materials and incorporating sustainable practices in both design and construction.
