“Quaal’s dramatic story has great potential as she chronicles that year before the plane’s wreckage was found in the Colorado mountains.” – ‘BlueInk Reviews

Jean Quaal’s “Searching: When Songbirds Ceased to Sing” is a heartbreaking memoir that recounts Jean Quaal’s story of longing and looking for her pilot husband, who was never found after his twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 414K vanished along with its passengers.

In her recollection, Jean describes the morning of October 28, 1974, when Roger Hlavka, her husband, and brother-in-law, Dewey Rathke, manned the plane from Gallup, Mexico, to Sturgis, South Dakota. The aircraft served as an air hearse for a father and his two teenage daughters, who were involved in a fatal car/train accident. Instead of taking the bodies to their burial, the plane went off-radar and vanished.

“Searching: When Songbirds Ceased to Sing” follows a search for the plane and the people onboard. It came to a point when Quaal turned to a psychic to help look for her husband. When the wreckage of the plane was found in the Colorado mountains, it was presumed that no one survived the crash.

BlueInk Review commented on Quaal’s composure in her book. They stated, “The author’s writing is direct without flourishing. She’s at her strongest when she describes her internal struggles.”

Jean Quaal also made an impression when she talked about how her romance with her husband started. BlueInk Review said, “It’s at once charming and important to establish the couple’s deep love.”

This is a true tale of unfathomable pain that sometimes leaps from the pages, offering gripping moments when at its best,” they added.
