Masterclass Tackling antisemitism and racism in football
On March 11, Norbert Hinterleitner and Joram Verhoeven from the Anne Frank House provide a masterclass Tackling antisemitism and racism in football through education on and off the pitch at the Fundamental Rights Forum 2024.
The Fundamental Rights Forum 2024, organized by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), will take place in Vienna on 11 and 12 March. The FRA unites thinkers, makers, creators, and doers with a simple goal: to shape Europe’s rights-based future. The Forum is a place to explore the pressing human rights challenges that we face in Europe today and will focus on the rights challenges related to three overarching themes - climate change, technological advances and the threats to democracy and civic space.
Masterclass
The Anne Frank House has a long tradition of countering antisemitism and discrimination through education. It carries out dedicated educational projects to prevent these phenomena. In recent years, their work has extended to hate speech and antisemitic chants in and around football stadiums.
This masterclass will introduce Anne Frank House’s efforts to eradicated antisemitism and racism in football stadiums and in amateur football clubs. The session will take the participants on a trip through Anne Frank House’s educational targets, and some of the difficulties they faced working with supporters and young amateur footballers. It will highlight the achievements and lessons learned from their work. Ultimately, the session will highlight that countering antisemitism and racism in football requires a common effort by football clubs, football associations, NGOs and local government bodies.
