While cancer mortality has gradually declined over the past several decades, there is still much that can be done to help prevent new cases.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer reports that as recently as 2020, there were over 13,000 new cases of cancer in Puerto Rico. Tragically, there were also more than 5,500 deaths due to cancer in Puerto Rico that year alone.

The American Association for Cancer Research has reported that more than 40% of all diagnosed cancers in the U.S. can be attributed to preventable causes. Environmental exposure to known and probable carcinogens can be a factor. For example, exposure to tobacco smoke, radon and asbestos have all been linked to various forms of cancer. In fact, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) provides a list of substances the agency considers to be potential occupational carcinogens that contains well over 100 substances. It includes everything from diesel exhaust and wood dust to gasoline, formaldehyde and crystalline silica.

“While cancer mortality has gradually declined over the past several decades, there is still much that can be done to help prevent new cases,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “This is why the month of February is recognized as National Cancer Prevention Month. It’s the perfect time to raise awareness in Puerto Rico and throughout the rest of the United States about the many ways we can lower our chances of developing cancer by avoiding exposure to carcinogens in the home and workplace.”

To help in this effort, Zimmetry’s industrial hygiene and environmental professionals offer testing, monitoring and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of carcinogens and other dangerous substances. They also provide building assessments, worksite inspections and training services to help keep companies and institutions in compliance with current health and safety regulations. Several years ago, Zimmetry even sponsored an educational video about National Cancer Prevention Month that can still be seen at:
