New York, NY – WEBWIRE

At CTSI, our industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals are dedicated to working with employers to help prevent accidents, injuries, illnesses, and deaths due to occupational hazards and exposure to harmful substances.

In December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. This latest report covers data from 2022 and tragically shows a one-year increase in fatal work injuries of 5.7 percent.

There were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States for 2022, an increase from the 5,190 in 2021. The fatal work injury rate was 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.6 per 100,000 FTE in 2021, and up from the 2020 rate of 3.4.

Key findings from the 2022 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:

  • A worker died every 96 minutes from a work-related injury in 2022 compared to 101 minutes in 2021.
  • Workers in transportation and material moving occupations experienced 1,620 fatal work injuries in 2022 and represented the occupational group with the most fatalities. The next highest was construction and extraction workers with 1,056 fatalities, an 11.0 percent increase from 2021.
  • Exposure to harmful substances or environments increased 5.1 percent in 2022 and led to 839 worker fatalities.

“This report follows the BLS publication on occupational injuries and illnesses that came out in November,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “In that document, private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5% from 2021. Each one of these injuries, illnesses, and deaths represents an individual and is a reminder that employers are required by law to provide a safe work environment for all their workers. At CTSI, our industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals are dedicated to working with employers to help prevent accidents, injuries, illnesses, and deaths due to occupational hazards and exposure to harmful substances. We offer workplace assessments, testing, training, and consulting services to identify and mitigate these types of risks.”
