Siemens Continues Innovation with Enhanced SOMATOM Emotion CT

With more than 5,000 systems installed, Siemens Medical Solutions has leveraged its wealth of user feedback to significantly enhance the SOMATOM Emotion. The new Emotion produces detailed, high-quality images with a slice thickness as small as 0.5 mm and with accelerated image reconstruction times.

“With its fully revised SOMATOM Emotion, Siemens is providing cost-effective access to modern 16-slice computed tomography,” said Scott Goodwin, vice president, Computed Tomography Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. “As a result, we assist in providing patient care that remains at a high level while keeping costs low - issues of major importance to health care today and tomorrow.”

Based on its economical price point, low lifecycle cost and compact design, this CT system addresses the unique demands of smaller hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers. The compact SOMATOM Emotion fits in just 60 square feet and can be quickly and easily installed. Its robust engineering (air-cooled and exceptionally durable X-ray tube) and its minimal power requirements mean the system works reliably even under the most demanding clinical schedules. The system also offers a patient- and user-friendly design, which simplifies patient access and positioning. This makes the examination a more pleasant patient experience and more economical since there is less time wasted on repositioning before scanning.

“As an outpatient care facility, we work under difficult competitive conditions. With our SOMATOM Emotion, we are able to provide a full spectrum of clinical care in a small space,” said Joseph F. Casoria, business manager at Hartsdale Imaging, Hartsdale, N.Y.

Keeping the patient in mind, the SOMATOM Emotion uses CARE Dose4D software to lower the radiation dose as much as clinically possible. The integrated software reduces radiation exposure by as much as 66 percent, compared to conventional CT scanning.

The system has enhanced diagnostic functions like computer-aided detection (CAD), syngo(R) WorkStream4D and syngo WebSpace. syngo Lung CAD provides a virtual “second set of eyes” to help radiologists render a diagnosis. The software automatically finds and marks potential pathology observed on CT scans. syngo Colonography, Siemens virtual colonoscopy software, offers the optional Polyp Enhanced Viewing, a tool designed to help identify potential polyps.

The new SOMATOM Emotion is also optimized for fast post-processing. syngo WorkStream4D virtually eliminates the need for time-consuming, manual image reconstruction. With syngo WebSpace, SOMATOM Emotion users have an optional thin-client workstation that allows physicians to access images securely over the Internet. Images are delivered from a central server and can be viewed in the office, or at home on a high quality PC or Laptop PC.
