EAST LANSING, Mich., July 1 -- Kevin A. Kelly, Managing Director since 1987 of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS), has been named Executive Director of the organization, effective July 15. MSMS represents more than 14,500 Michigan physicians, with headquarters in East Lansing.

Kelly, 49, succeeds William E. Madigan, who announced his retirement in May after 30 years at MSMS.

Kelly joined MSMS in 1979 as legislative coordinator, and was promoted to manager of government relations and membership development five years later. As Managing Director, Kelly directed federal and state government relations, hospital/medical staff communications and professional relations, membership development and integrated departmental programs.

“Kevin has done an exceptional job as managing director,” said MSMS Board Chair Michael A. Sandler, MD. “We look forward to many years of his outstanding leadership as executive director.”

Kelly holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University. He is a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned a B.A. degree in Economics. In 2004, Kelly received one of his alma mater’s highest honors, the MSU Distinguished Alumni Award.

“Medicine in this state is fortunate to have such a man of integrity, respect for family, and commitment to his community,” said MSMS Immediate Past President John M. MacKeigan, MD. “Kevin Kelly has the energy and vision to forge new ground in health care. All citizens of Michigan will continue to benefit from his leadership and devotion to service.”

Kelly’s numerous professional affiliations include: the American Medical Society’s (AMA) Federation Advisory Committee to the Executive Vice President; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation Grants Advisory Panel; Capitol National Bank Board of Directors; Governor’s Commission on Health & Safety; Group Insurance Trust Board of Trustees; Medical Advantage Group Board of Directors; Michigan Children’s Board of Directors; Michigan Health Council Vice Chair; Michigan Health Policy Forum Board of Directors; Michigan Public Health Association; Michigan State Medical Society Foundation Vice President; Michigan Youth in Government Board of Directors; Professional Credential Verification Services, Inc. Board of Directors; and Sparrow Hospital Foundation Chair.

Together with Madigan, Kelly received the AMA’s Medical Executive Achievement Award in 1999. Kelly also received the Michigan Society of Association Executives Strategic Association Leader Award, and the Vernice Davis Anthony Ele’s Place Award, recognizing his leadership of that agency’s efforts to counsel grieving children.

Kelly has been involved in numerous community and service organizations, including the American Cancer Society; City of East Lansing Manager Search Committee; Lansing Community College Blue Ribbon Committee; Michigan Coalition for Safety Belt Use; Michigan Festival past president; Michigan Transplant Policy Center, and Wharton Center Advisory Council, past chair.

Kelly has been married for 24 years to Jamie Savvas Kelly, and together they have two sons, Daniel (18) and Michael (16). They live in East Lansing.
