National elections in the Netherlands will be held on Wednesday November 22 2023. The Anne Frank House is one of the voting locations on that day. Amsterdammers can cast their votes in the entrance hall from 9am to 7pm and then visit the museum free of charge. The Anne Frank House is one of the places that serves as a reminder of what can happen when democracy and the rule of law break down.

[i"The Anne Frank House calls attention to the vital importance of freedom, equal rights and democracy. Anne Frank was born in a democratic country, but four years later her homeland had become a dictatorship. It’s important to realise that democracy is fragile and that we must cherish our democratic values. The right to vote is the foundation of our democratic rule of law. We hope to welcome many Amsterdammers to the Anne Frank House on election day" [/i]- Ronald Leopold, Executive Director of the Anne Frank House

Lessons on democracy

After casting their votes in the entrance hall, Amsterdammers can visit the museum, the place where Anne Frank went into hiding and wrote her diary.

The temporary exhibition The Frank family in Frankfurt am Main, 1929-1933 is currently on display, using the story of the Frank family in Frankfurt to shed light on the period when Germany changed from a democratic country into a dictatorship. Complementing the exhibition is a short animation, which explains in a series of ‘lessons’ how to resist the erosion of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism.

Young people

The Anne Frank House believes it is important that young people in particular go out to vote. The ability to cast your vote and express your opinion are essential for participating in a democracy. Under the slogan ‘Democracy only works when everyone participates’ and the hashtags #doemeecratie and #democracyisyours, we are calling attention to this on our social media.
