Bed Bugs in New York City and Resources to Identify their Presence to Prevent Full-Blown Infestations

Media outlets from across the globe recently reported on Paris officials battling a bed bug infestation that has impacted the famous city that is set to host the Olympics next summer. However, bed bugs are not just a French problem, the insects are found globally and have been discovered in everything from five-star hotels and resorts to cruise ships, buses, trains, and homes.

In New York City, tenants have the right to a bed bug-free environment. The insects are specifically named on the list of insects that building owners are legally required to eradicate. In fact, New York City lists bed bugs as a Class B violation. This means they are considered hazardous and landlords have 30 days to correct a problem. Landlords must not only get rid of any infestations, they have to keep the affected units from getting infested again.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that bed bugs can cause property loss, expense, and inconvenience,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “The agency also states that the best way to prevent bed bugs is with regular inspections for signs of an infestation.
