Frank-Yet-Moving Poetry by Women’s Author Whitney Ford Exhibited at Printers Row Lit Fest 2023

Throughout America’s literary history, Chicago’s own Printers Row served as a major publishing hub and a launch point for many poets. Eeven today, authors like Whitney Ford still see it as an avenue for sharing the work in the form of the Printers Row Lit Fest. Ford is a mindset coach who has an extensive experience working in mental health and the crisis the field is witnessing today. In her book “Sister, How Are You?” she talks about these problems from the perspective of women she knows.

“To be a woman in today’s society is to still face so many challenges. This collection is dedicated to all the ones longing to know they are not alone in those trials.”

When it comes to American literature, the Printers Row area of Chicago was said to have published a great many authors with a wide range of views begging to be read by the American public.

And at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023, poets like Whitney Ford still feel the same. It’s why her book “Sister, How Are You?” was exhibited during the event. The exhibit was made possible with the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company.

Whitney is a practicing mindset coach who strives to teach the art of pivoting and navigating through life’s challenges. However, given the great tide of challenges in mental health today, she knows there is a lot of frustration beneath the surface. Hence, her book is a collection of poems that lays these issues (particularly from the perspective of women). It also contains likeminded contributions from her two friends, Erica and Brittany Metcalf.

Like many poems with similar themes, “Sister, How Are You?” covers the experiences of women still faced with unequal treatment as well as lack of being heard. Its central theme is particularly focused on the emptiness in the narratives about the ‘improvement’ this century claims to have made.

For Ford and her friends, the only improvement seems to have been a promise of politeness that is only skin deep. The willingness to actually listen, pay attention and acknowledge the realities expressed by women’s voices remains absent.

Thus, it is her hope that having her work read at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023 will make people be aware of where the real solutions lie. Every piece is meant to challenge readers to stop reaching out for the sake of quickly dismissing lingering problems but to start genuinely caring.
