Charles Coffin’s Personal Account of Internal Conflicts Within the Vietnam-Era Navy Was Exhibited During Printers Row Lit Fest 2023

Books published by veterans were among the many exhibited during the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023. One book, Charles Coffin’s “Tempest,” stands out considerably with its brave testimony of abuse and the admirable spirit he possessed to endure it all. Furthermore, the book shares his thoughts on how the darker dynamics of relationships can just as easily apply in other fields where abusers take root.

“I couldn’t put this book down. it’s an entertaining quick read yet much can be learned on how to deal with difficult people in situations that one cannot easily extricate themselves from. Many of the US servicemen who served in Vietnam, like Charles, (Tuck) were of the silent generation who still retained the values of the greatest generation, not least of which was a sense of duty. Whether you are a manager or aspire to be one, you will learn something from this book.” - David Hirschman

The Printers Row Lit Fest had once again turned the streets of Chicago into an opportunity for its people to rediscover the joys of reading. And much like any large-scale book event, it was also an opportunity to give a platform to a number of different voices in American society, such as veterans.

One veteran, Charles Coffin, takes a few steps further in his published true story “Tempest.” The book was displayed with the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company.

Coffin is an avid outdoor enthusiast with a love of traveling while also having an extensive career in electronics manufacturing. However, he has never forgotten the few-but-intense years he had spent as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

“Tempest” is his honest account of his experience that exposes a troubling culture of bullying during his time there. Much of the book details Coffin’s many experiences with bullying by superior officers along with a culture that only communicates through intimidation.

On the other hand, Coffin does not believe that such things are exclusive to the military. The toxic power of harmful manipulation he witnessed could have just as easily happened in other settings (such as in corporations or small communities). The main point he wants to convey is that the best way to handle such things is to try to endure and be better than one’s abusers.

Many visitors to the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023 got a good read on how well this principle saw Charles Coffin through his trials. For those who were not able to go to the literary festival but would like to learn more about his story, “Tempest” is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
