“A poetically swinging alphabet on fine, feathered wings.”

Earlier in September, the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023 took place along the streets of Chicago. Dozens of curious readers and book lovers browsed exhibits and explored the work of many newly published authors. So, for a passionate wildlife photographer like Carol Ann Gault, it was a great opportunity to put out her own educational photo book.

The said photo book, “Albatross to Zenaida,” is a collection featuring a wide variety of bird species, with each one representing a letter of the alphabet. The book also has a rhyming scheme that talks about the most unique features of each bird. Its exhibit was made with the support of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company.

Gault’s love for photography dates all the way back to when she was five. For the first half of it all, photography was a side hobby, yet one she eagerly practiced at every chance she got. She then gained a great love for the natural world along the way when she pursued a master’s degree in mammal ecology.

At some point, however, she saw more opportunities to finally take her camera work to great professional heights. She started taking more classes and several workshops at Colorado Mountain College, including lessons from National Geographic photographer David Hiser.

“Albatross to Zenaida” is just one of a new series of projects that she has been making out of her wildlife photography work. She plans to make other books featuring other types of animals. Asides from that, she has been using her photos in other creative products to promote conservation and foster a love for the environment with young readers.

Carol Gault’s “Albatross to Zenaida” is available on Amazon.

Author Bio
At the ripe old age of five years old, with 3 cereal box tops, and 50 cents, Carol Gault purchased her first camera. With the first roll of film, she learned how to hold the camera steady and relatively level. When that camera ceased to function, her parents let her take their old Kodak with a shutter that sounded like the horn of a Model T car, and she was off to Y camp, taking pictures of her friends and counselors. The Kodak Instamatic became her favorite tool in her teenage years, and it wasn’t until her mid-twenties that she managed to buy a single-lens reflex.

While she was in graduate school and working on a master’s degree, she worked part-time in a needlework store and became a needlework designer. She achieved her master’s degree in mammal ecology and then had two children and learned about being a mammal firsthand. The camera became a supplement to her career as an at-home biologist, a designer, and a mom. Most of her picture-taking was snapshots of children, flowers in the backyard, and the occasional vacation trip. She had a book published, "Needlework Dragons and other Mythical Creatures" with Van Nostrand Rheinhold. She took classes on graphic design and computer graphics and self-published several needlework instruction pamphlets.

As a perpetual student and moving to Aspen as a refugee from real life, she started taking her photography more seriously and attended classes with David Hiser, the faculty at Colorado Mountain College, and various workshops offered in the west. Using the biology and design skills she’s picked up along the way, she is now a landscape and wildlife photographer. She has taught digital imaging and photography at the local Colorado Mountain College. Aspen Light Imaging is her company that produces note cards, magnets, laser prints, and other gift-related items from her photographs.
