Fantasy Novel by Cartoonist-Turned-Author Phillip Thompson Displayed at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023

For many new authors, events like the Printers Row Lit Fest are a big opportunity to connect with readers by exhibiting their books at wide, open venues. It is just the kind of exposure sought out by Philip Thompson, an artist who had published a fantasy novel as a way to incorporate storytelling into his work. The tile of his book is simply “Imagination,” a fun yet also emotional tale about two people discovering themselves as they literally dive into a book.

“Jason and Aaliyah have been whisked to a world where they come face to face with magic, danger and their own personal issues.”

Last September, the exhibits at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023 teemed with thousands of books on the streets of Chicago. The event is an annual celebration that commemorates the locale’s legacy in America’s publishing industry. In decades past, Printers Row was once the launch point of many newspapers, novels, magazines, and more.

So, for Philip Thompson, an artist who had just decided to give authorship a try, it was an exciting chance to show his work to more readers.

Thompson is an artist and a cartoonist, having been inspired by ‘90s era cartoons to use his talent for storytelling. His book, “Imagination,” features a plot greatly inspired by those shows.

The plot centers on Jason Carmichael and his best friend (as well as secret love interest) Aaliyah. Jason is a writer who often struggles in his search for the freshest bit of inspiration and is a big fan of fantasy.

Eventually, he finds his wish granted in the form of the titular book, filling him with excitement and bringing Aaliyah along to check it out.

What they do not expect is to suddenly find themselves literally drawn into the book and recast as the very same characters they are reading about!

However, as the readers go along with them on the journey, the pair will also start learning something about themselves as they live out the story to its end.

Thompson was able to exhibit his book with the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company. Without a doubt, he was very honored to have it exhibited at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2023.
