Spectra BlueScale Cures Hospital Security Headaches

BOULDER, Colo. - St. John’s Hospital has purchased the Spectra® T950 and T120 libraries with BlueScale Encryption Professional Edition to secure all backed up data that leaves the hospital. St. John’s will now encrypt all data sent offsite; because encrypted data is considered irretrievable without the keys, this protects the data from unauthorized use and the hospital from violating Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and associated legal fall-out.

St. John’s Hospital electronic data includes patient medical records, e-mail, active directory settings and other business data. HIPAA requires healthcare institutions to store and protect patient records by implementing standards and requirements for the electronic transmission, storage, and destruction of personal health information. With BlueScale Encryption, St. John’s hospital is also caring for data about its patients (Protected Health Information — PHI), as mandated by HIPAA.

“The BlueScale Encryption software launched Spectra Logic to the top of our vendor list,” said Chad Goldhammer, network facilitator at St. John’s Hospital, who recommended the Spectra purchase. “No other tape library had integrated AES-256 bit encryption — and more importantly, simple key management tools — which are both crucial to St. John’s Hospital for HIPAA requirements and easy IT administration.”

Spectra Logic’s AES-256 bit hardware-based encryption is the only truly integrated encryption for data stored on tape and other removable media. Users can seamlessly and affordably add encryption to the backup strategy – with no changes to backup policies and no additional hardware or software. In a single step, you can encrypt, compress and back up data. Because encryption is hardware-based, it minimally affects backup windows, and it doesn’t burden the network. Managing encryption and the keys used to encrypt data is simple, because it’s handled through the library’s graphic interface — on the web and on the front panel.

“Many healthcare organizations have or plan to transition their processes from paper to electronic, such as patient record keeping, and are converting diagnostic tools such as x-rays and scans to digital format,” said Hossein ZiaShakeri, SVP of strategic marketing and business development. “While these newer processes improve efficiency, they produce even more data that must be stored, retained, protected, secured and backed up. Spectra Logic products meet all these healthcare industry needs.”

“We felt that Spectra Logic was the industry leader in size, capacity and expandability,” Goldhammer added. “The Spectra Logic library has been rock solid since we implemented it.”
