Jocelyn Turner’s revolutionary book challenges conventional wisdom, urging us to reevaluate the very core of the American educational system.

The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet exhibited the education policy, assessment and reform book “Fighting the White Knight: Saving Education from Misguided Testing, Inappropriate Standards, and Other Good Intentions” by Jocelyn Turner at the 2023 San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books. The book festival was organized by the University of San Diego and held at their campus in San Diego, CA, on August 19, 2023.

In a gripping exposé that shakes the very foundations of education, Jocelyn Turner, in her groundbreaking work “Fighting the White Knight,” delivers an unfiltered frontline perspective on the current state of learning.

Initially, Turner embarked on her teaching journey with a heart full of passion, eager to ignite a love for learning among her middle-school and high-school students. However, what she discovered within the educational system was a stark contrast to her aspirations. Instead of nurturing young minds, she found that the system meant to support education was systematically stifling it.

With candor and conviction, Turner lays bare her teaching experiences, offering readers an unfiltered glimpse into the harrowing reality of government-mandated standards and relentless, often inappropriate testing that demoralizes students across America.

Turner reveals the grim truth that strategies intended to bridge the achievement gap often have the opposite effect, deepening the chasm between students. In her final year of teaching, she was compelled to sacrifice a staggering one-fifth of her precious instructional hours to meet the relentless demands of testing, assessments grounded in curriculum goals that demanded substantial remedial education, and resources her students could barely access.

Jocelyn Turner was a teacher of Spanish, and bilingual English, social studies, science and mathematics. She retired from Neal Math and Science Academy, a middle school with students who are 99% low income, 49% Hispanic, 33% African-American, 11% white, 38% English learners, and 4% homeless. Chronic absenteeism at Neal stands at 48.7%. She has an M.A. in Teaching, Secondary Mathematics (National-Louis University), a Master of Business and Public Management (Rice University), and a B.A. in Political Science (University of Puget Sound). During her ten years of teaching, Ms. Turner served under twelve principals, watched her district’s board be fired and replaced, and survived losing her favorite principal to government grant requirements. Ms. Turner managed to intersect No Child Left Behind, Response to Intervention, Race to the Top, Rising Star, the Common Core, and PARCC. If she had been teaching in the 1300s, Ms. Turner suspects she would have been standing on the docks in Messina just in time to herald the arrival of the Black Death.
