Veteran Patrick Zeigler Jr.’s book “Both Ends of the Barrel: From the Troop Surge to Fort Hood A Dozen Years in the Global War” was exhibited by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest. The book fair and outdoor literary festival ran from September 9 to 10, 2023, at Printers Row Park, South Loop, Chicago, Illinois.

“Both Ends of the Barrel” is a military memoir that recounts the life of war veteran Patrick Zeigler Jr. in a historic tragedy that shook everyone in 2009. The book covers Zeigler’s point-of-view of the Fort Hood shooting when a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist terrorized and massacred his colleagues inside their own base.

As a massacre survivor, writing this book is one of Zeigler’s ways to recover from the tragedy. He was the most critically wounded survivor of the shooting. He was shot four times, including a direct blow to the head.

“Both Ends of the Barrel” is also Zeigler’s way of memorializing the victims who perished at Fort Hood. It is painful to visit the past that scarred him for life, but he considers this as an opportunity to lay the memories to rest. His goal is to dedicate his life to helping others overcome their PTSD from traumatic experiences. This book is the tool that will help him accomplish that task. If the story empowers just one person to overcome challenges and live a better life, then he has accomplished his mission.
