Thomas Pandola shared his insights on wildfire preparedness in his book “Big Fires Start Small: The Case for a Paradigm Shift in California’s Response to Today’s Wildfire Crisis”. The book was recently exhibited by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books, which was held at the University of San Diego, San Diego, CA, last August 19, 2023.

ReadersMagnet supports self-published and independent authors in their publishing and marketing endeavors. One way the company does to support authors is to showcase their works at major national and international book events, such as the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books.

“Big Fires Start Small” aims toward educating Californians about the changes that can and should be made in regard to fighting wildfires before they erupt into something uncontrollable and dangerous. Pandola urges citizens and wildfire policymakers alike to adopt a paradigm shift with the main objective of having resources available to put off all wildfires within twenty minutes, specifically with water-dropping helicopters and long-term wildfire mitigation strategies.

Beginning with a brief historical perspective, his personal experience with wildfires, supported by quotes from experts and elected officials, Pandola looks at the current wildfire paradigm and lessons from other wildfire disasters. The author also shares a scientific explanation of wildfires and the dangers of the smoke they produce. He goes on to explain the complications of fighting wildfires in California and why a paradigm shift is necessary.
