New York, NY – WEBWIRE

It’s important for people to recognize that the symptoms of various fungal diseases can be similar to those of some viral or bacterial diseases.

Fungal Disease Awareness Week (FDAW) kicks off today and runs through the 22nd. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created FDAW to highlight the importance of recognizing, treating, and preventing serious fungal diseases.

According to the CDC:

Many people are affected by fungal diseases at different points in their lives, whether dealing with a somewhat common ringworm infection or coping with losing a loved one from a healthcare-associated fungal infection. In some parts of the United States and the world, it is difficult to avoid breathing in fungal spores that cause infections like histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, or Valley fever.

“It’s important for people to recognize that the symptoms of various fungal diseases can be similar to those of some viral or bacterial diseases,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “This is why CDC cautions that misdiagnoses or delayed diagnoses can cost lives. Exposure to elevated levels of fungi can also act as a respiratory irritant, allergen, or even an asthma trigger for some people with the condition. These are all reasons why preventing the growth of indoor mold (fungi) is so important. This is especially true in healthcare environments or other places with populations with suppressed or weakened immune systems.”

Dedicated to helping businesses, institutions, and healthcare providers prevent indoor mold growth, or to identify its presence if it has already become an indoor issue, are the infection control, industrial hygiene, and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) experts at CTSI. Their professionals provide consulting, testing, monitoring, and training services to protect against preventable exposures to fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens in the built environment.
