The author talks about how civilization destroys happiness by eliminating the socially bonded groups through which people once depended on each other for survival.

“This book asked a lot of valid questions that you will continue to ask yourself afterwards.” – Hager Salem.

Chet Shupe appeared on the syndicated radio talk show Tonight with Kate Delaney to share insights from his book “Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature: How Civilization Destroys Happiness” (Second Edition).

The book sparks conversations and self-reflection by revealing how the emotional connections essential to our sense of purpose and emotional health have been severed by our present dependence on money to survive.

Chet Shupe was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 43. When treated with Ritalin, his life made sense. Previously, it had largely been a story of surrealistic horrors. In hopes that others might experience the “miracle” he had, he began writing on medically treating dysfunctional brains.

“Because of my background in system control theory, I looked at the brain from the perspective that it is the controller of the species. It controls the individual, of course, but on behalf of the species. When thinking about how the brain would have to be organized to serve its purpose, my subject changed from brain dysfunction to cultural dysfunction,” Chet Shupe told America Tonight host Kate Delaney.

Delaney asked him how people can make a difference when they’re struggling with depression and everything else in between.

“The only relief I can offer is to assure people that it’s not their fault.” Shupe responded. “We all suffer emotionally, because, not free to serve life in our relationships with the people around us, we are limited to serving self by accumulating personal wealth. We thus exist without the sense of purpose, meaning, and love for one another that is essential to our emotional health.

Chet Shupe added: “I hope to provide a perspective of life in which readers will understand the importance of interdependent relationships, not only to their sense of wellbeing, but to the wellbeing of life itself.”

Author’s Biography

As a whistle-blower to the world, Chet Shupe speaks with urgency about the need to rediscover people’s connections with their own nature, if we are ever again to experience the contentment of sisterhood and brotherhood that is our natural heritage.

Chet Shupe is an electronics engineer who suffered from severe Attention Deficit Disorder, for much of his life. When he was 43, his condition was finally diagnosed, and he began treatment with Ritalin. Suddenly, life made sense. As a result of that extraordinary experience, he began writing on brain dysfunction to provide a conceptual framework for medically treating the brain.

As a result of that effort—combined with his professional knowledge of system control theory—Shupe’s subject soon changed from brain dysfunction to cultural dysfunction. He realized that the brain cannot find lasting contentment, nor can it produce behavior that serves the individual or the species, when functioning in a reality that, emotionally, it does not comprehend.
