Chatsworth, CA – WEBWIRE

In addition to fatal accidents and serious injuries, farmers and agricultural workers can be at risk of exposure to a number of airborne hazards.

Since 1944, the third week of September has been recognized as National Farm Safety and Health Week. The National Safety Council was the first to promote the week of recognition and it is now led by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS).

The theme for 2023 is No One Can Take Your Place. Each weekday, from September 18th through the 22nd, has a unique topic. For this year, they include:

  • Equipment & Rural Roadway Safety – Monday
  • Health and Wellness - Tuesday
  • Priority Populations - Wednesday
  • Confined Spaces - Thursday
  • Brain Health - Friday

In addition to fatal accidents and serious injuries, farmers and agricultural workers can be at risk of exposure to a number of airborne hazards. These include everything from mold, bacteria and viruses, to combustible dusts, fumes, insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants and fertilizers to name just a few. Exposure to various hazardous gases can also be a risk, these could include elevated concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and other gases.

“Agriculture is a huge business in California, employing over 500,000 workers and creating tens of billions of dollars in product each year,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark (CSC). “It also happens to be one of the most occupations according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. At CSC, our industrial hygiene and environmental, health and safety professionals support the agricultural industry in California, Arizona and the surrounding region. CSC offers testing, monitoring, consulting and training services. These services cover exposure risks to microbial, chemical and combustible dust hazards. We also provide confined space and personal protective equipment training, including respiratory fit testing services to help ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.”

Last year, CSC sponsored an educational video about National Farm Safety and Health Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/Pwp9S-LuTqg
