The San Diego Union-Tribune’s own annual Festival of Books has just ended. Hundreds of visitors showed up, many of them in search of new educational materials to bring into libraries and classrooms. Likewise, new authors like Juli-Ann Gasper were more than happy to help by exhibiting books designed to make big words easy to learn. Her book, “Way Up North Where the Kittiwakes Play,” is an impressive and conversational intro to the scientific wonders of the arctic world.

“With pictures of her Arctic North adventure, Juli-Ann introduces young readers to wonderful words used in science.”

The San Diego Union-Tribune just held its 7th Festival of Books this August, and dozens of visitors came down to check out new publications covering a wide range of categories. These included no small number of educators, teachers, and librarians looking for good material.

Yet, for those looking for a book that improves literacy while also introducing kids to the science of the natural world, Juli-Ann Gasper’s book is a great example.

Its title is “Way Up North Where the Kittiwakes Play: An A to Z Alphabet Book for Child and Adult,” and Gasper managed to have it displayed with the help of ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book-marketing company, at the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books.

The book is a list that includes many scientific words from A to Z, but Gasper’s explanations are written in a way that makes reading aloud very easy and enjoyable – even for very young children. Kids can learn about what methane is or get their first lesson on camouflage. With every letter, young readers develop a deeper understanding of nature while also being prepared for future science education.

A retired professor, Gasper once traveled to the Arctic North. The trip eventually became a major source of inspiration for this alphabet book. In fact, many of the pictures used to illustrate are directly from her trip. She has a deep appreciation for the wonders of these frozen environments and all of its species. And as such, she aspires to educate both young and old readers about these treasures with this new work.

Many visitors to the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books had plenty of opportunity to check out “Way Up North Where the Kittiwakes Play: An A to Z Alphabet Book for Child and Adult.” For those looking to get a copy of Juli-Ann Gasper’s alphabet book, head to Amazon and InstantPublisher.
