Businesses and institutions should have a plan in place and know who they can call to prepare for, and respond to, a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood, tornado, wildfire or earthquake.

In 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The annual event encourages people in Puerto Rico and across the nation to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions and communities.

The theme for this year’s NPM is Preparing for Older Adults. The campaign will focus on preparing older adults for disasters, specifically older adults from communities that are disproportionally impacted by the all-hazard events, which continue to threaten the nation according to FEMA.

Businesses and institutions should also have a plan in place and know who they can call to prepare for, and respond to, a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood, tornado, wildfire or earthquake. Other emergencies they could face and need to have a plan for include pandemics, human-caused hazards like accidents and acts of violence, and even technology-related events like power outages and equipment failures.

“Around 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen according to Ready.gov,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “This is why it’s so critical to be prepared and have plans and resources in place. A key component of this is knowing which professionals can inspect, test, monitor and develop solutions for a wide range of environmental, health and safety issues.”

Zimmetry Environmental provides these services in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean. Their specialists identify and mitigate potential hazards that may occur in the event of a disaster, both indoors and outdoors. This includes industrial hygiene, environmental, safety and infection control services for biological, chemical and physical exposure risks. In addition, Zimmetry offers comprehensive facility-wide safety and health programs, regulatory compliance assessments and management training, personal protective equipment and safety training, and many other services.
