Keona A. Barnett will have her book, “Blooming in Muddy Waters,” displayed at the 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest. The book fair and outdoor literary festival will occur on September 9-10, 2023, at Printers Row Park, 620 South Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL, USA.

The Printers Row Lit Fest is an annual event that celebrates not only the written word but also Chicago’s publishing and literary legacy. The literary festival is organized by the not-for-profit Near South Planning Board and is the largest outdoor literary showcase in the Midwest, attracting over 100,000 visitors. The Printers Row Lit Fest features book exhibits, book signings, panel discussions, staged readings, and various other programs for adults, young adults, and children.

“Blooming in Muddy Waters” tells the story of how Keona and her twin brother were deprived of their father’s love as he passed away before their birth. Even though they never had a chance to experience his love, his absence left a void in their lives, especially for their mother. Their mother worked hard to provide for her three children and later even for her second husband.

The book follows the author learning how to cope with neglect, loneliness, and anger that follows the dysfunctional dynamics of her family. Due to the constant uprooting of her family, she fails to form lasting friendships. Her struggles also include battling through her mental anguish. She powers through by breaking the patterns and finding herself through her faith in God.

Author’s Biography

Keona Annette Barnett was born in Augusta, Ga and raised in Athens, Ga, where she worked in the health care field as a health administrator for patient care and safety operations.

Keona’s journal inspired this book as a young adult throughout parenthood. The most important message she wants to send her readers is the importance of communication between family and friends. People go their whole lives dealing with trauma from adolescence to adulthood, falling short of becoming the ideal version of themselves because of the things they cannot let go of. They continue dragging that same trauma with them throughout their lives when it could be resolved simply with heart-to-heart conversations. Keona has mentored many kids and helped them overcome their struggles through puberty. She wants to continue inspiring everyone who has given up hope because they don’t feel heard.
