Kenny “Sad Papaw” Harmon takes a leap from internet fame to a published book.

Remember Sad Papaw? Well, not only had he became a viral internet sensation and a meme, but he had also published three books to date. His first book is titled “Sad Papaw’s Heritage” (Peppertree Press; 2017), which was published a year after he attained internet virality in 2016.

Kenny “Sad Papaw” Harmon became an internet sensation after his granddaughter, Kelsey Harmon, tweeted a photo of him looking disappointed after five of his six grandchildren skipped a cookout he prepared. Kelsey was the only grandchild present at dinner, although her brother, Kaleb, came later. To play a joke on her cousins, she took a candid photo of her Papaw eating and then shared the photo on Twitter. What followed next is history – and a writing and publishing career for Sad Papaw.

“Sad Papaw’s Heritage” is written with the help of Charlotte Hopkins, a freelance writer and reporter for several publications who reached out to him after the internet craze. The book is about Harmon’s family living in Kentucky during the mid-1800s and their migration westward to Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

“As I began to look into my family’s history further, I thought it was interesting enough to do a book,” he told The Norman Transcript.

Harmon and Hopkins did a lot of research on Harmon’s family. The latter also talked to family members and museum curators and even found things that the family didn’t know about.

“The book not only touches on Harmon’s family history but also American history. It’s definitely worth the read,” said Hopkins. Their collaboration further led to the publication of two follow-up books, “Sad Papaw’s The Early Years” and “Sad Papaw’s Those Were The Days.”
