Author’s Biography

Jerry L. Copley Jr. grew up as the son of a high school teacher, coach, principal, and county school administrator. His mother ran her own business in the dental field. His parents were very influential in his life. He has two brothers and two sisters. As a product of Southern Ohio, he realized the challenges of growing up in rural Appalachia early on. Unlike most of his schoolmates and acquaintances, both his parents were well-educated, and knew education would be the key to make the most of his future – especially if he intended to stay in Appalachia and raise his own children.

After graduating from Peebles High School in 1984, Jerry attended Shawnee State Community College and then completed his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Chemistry at Ohio University in 1988. He taught middle school math and high school chemistry in New Boston, Ohio. He left the field of teaching and took a position as a laboratory technician at Centrus, a uranium-enrichment facility in Piketon, Ohio. While working, he continued his education receiving his Master Degree in School Leadership and Masters in Business Administration, returned to teaching high school Mathematics and ultimately became interested in economics and the plight of conditions affecting both rural communities and inner-city populations.

Jerry wrote this book, entitled “Real World Finance: Boost Your Financial Literacy as All Schools Have Failed to Do” to help students, young adults, and the lesser-educated understand financial concepts that they can apply to improve their quality of life. Trying to help people, lift them up, and show them a way forward is a part of the Catholic values that were instilled in him at an early age. They encompass the educational values he holds dear and strives to share. This book is his way of giving back by helping others understand concepts that can make their life a little easier, reduce their anxieties, and lead them to more financial security.
