With the US economy in meltdown, a cliffside “Black Saturday” celebration encouraging invitees to spend lavishly results in a baffling death. One guest, grieving widower Dr. Bradley, assists Detective Abelove and reengages with life. Bradley finds Abelove’s best witness in a young scientist brain-damaged by drowning. Soon police learn that one party waiter is his father, slightly connected to the victim, and detain him. But then Mexican police retrieve the beached corpse of another guest still alive before the waiter’s arrest.

Earning an MFA in playwriting, Freya Smallwood won the Lucille Ball Award for Comedy and also received the honor of having her thesis play produced in UCLA’s theater season.

Remaining in essence a tragedian dramatist, she migrated to fictional murder with the Cop&Doc Mystery Novels featuring Detective Tor Abelove and Dr. Bradley. When research neuroscientist Bradley, a grieving widower, observes to a friend that Tor “suffers for the truth in a way I haven’t for a long time,” he touches part of the explanation for his unlikely friendship with an uneducated former surfing star.

First published of the series is “The Raptor’s Grasp,” in which their collaboration as crime solvers becomes comfortable to both, while they progress toward a father-son relationship. The Cop&Docs are set in the beguiling coastal city of make-believe Santa Christina, California.
